Dear One Tough Muther,
For the last year I have been experiencing terrible anxiety. It is not constant, it comes and it goes however at some points it is just awful.
I don’t wanna go on medication at 53 but I’m having a very difficult time dealing with this.
So many people I know, even me, suffers from anxiety episodes. There are some days when I get that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach and my mind and my heart begins to race. Those feeling can be very debilitating. There are a lot of pressures in life, both in our personal and our professional space and those pressures sometimes allows anxiety to sneak in and rob us of our positive thoughts.
I know that I use the 4-4-6- breathing technique when my anxiety sends my thoughts and my heart racing.
- Breathe in for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4 seconds
- Breathe out slowly for 6 seconds
However Harrah, I’d also like to point something else out.
You mentioned that you are 53 yrs old, did you have anxiety before this? Have you suffered from anxiety through your life or has it recently manifested and more frequently rears it’s ugly head?
The reason I ask whether you have had an issue with anxiety throughout your life is, menopause typically occurs in women between the age of 49 and 52 years. A lot of women experience anxiety in menopause because of the hormonal imbalance menopause brings.
Muther says, speak to your gynecologist and explain exactly how you feel and tell the doctor how long you have felt this way. Explain to your doctor that you don’t want to take medication and ask if they have any natural treatments or control methods they can suggest.
The 4-4-6 breathing technique helps me tremendously. It has helped me stay calm and in control of my thoughts, relieved anxiety’s grip and calm down. Hey, it is worth a try because anxiety sucks and it may just help you.
Best of luck and huge Muther hugs,
One Tough Muther
