When quitting a habit should you quit cold turkey or slow and steady. I’m trying to quit smoking but I’m afraid I won’t be able to do it. I use it more as a social thing.

I quit a long time ago by chewing spearmint gum however I have been chewing gum ever since. I remember I slowly eliminated a cigarette a day until I was down to only a few cigarettes a day and then boom I just quit. It took me years to get over the urge to smoke with a drink in a bar, with my coffee or when I was stressed. In fact it’s been almost 20 years and if smoking was not a death sentence I’d still be doing it because I enjoyed it.
I totally think quitting a habit such as smoking is a very personal and individual experience. I know people who have quit cold turkey, chewed nicotine gum, took prescription medication and any number of other things but for me it was best to just be done.
Blanch, I think it is fabulous that you are quitting and I also think you will do it, you just need to do it the way that is best for you. How ever you decide to do it, remember the reasons you are quitting and keep at it, you can do it.
